RAGHAV KUMAR and HOJUNG KIM: TESTIMONIES

1st May 2017

BGS PERFORMANCE ACDEMY. Testimonies: Raghav Kumar (Tufts University, Boston) and Hojung Kim (University of Chicago).

Recently Barcelona Global Squash was visited by Hojung Kim and Raghav Kumar. Both are College Squash Association players from two prominent US universities. Hojung Kim is from The University of Chicago and Raghav Kumar from Tufts University, Boston.

We caught up with both of them during their respective training in BGS. This is what we asked:

RAGHAV KUMAR, Tufts University (BOSTON).

BGS: Raghav, first of all, could you just tell us how you found out about Barcelona Global Squash? Why did you decide to visit us?

I decided to visit visit Barcelona Global Squash because I was in Barcelona for a few days and wanted to play some good squash. I was pleasantly surprised by how welcoming Victor and his team were to me so I wanted nothing more than to join the training sessions for a few days.

BGS: Tell us a little about your squash background and current participation in college squash.

I am originally from San Francisco, California and have been playing squash for eleven years now. During my time playing junior squash I trained with Richard Elliott and Gareth Webber. Currently, I play for the Tufts University squash team.

BGS:  Perhaps you could tell us and our readers what you most liked about your short experience in Barcelona Global Squash.

I really enjoyed how much fun I had playing but also how much I learned during the three days I spent training with the guys. Victor is a fantastic coach who knows how to push his players to become better while also creating an inclusive environment for players like me to find ways to mix in as well. I am glad I visited Victor at Barcelona Global Squash because he was able to give me some unique insight into the way I play the game that I had never heard before.

BGS: More and more American students are doing study abroad programs every year; there is a continual year-on-year increase in numbers as Colleges want their students to be more international and better prepared for the Global world. Tell us about yourself; is this something you are considering yourself?

I am considering being a Biology major while also completing requirements to be pre-med. I am still undecided about doing a study abroad for a semester, but if I do, I would love to do it in Barcelona!

HOJUNG KIM, University of Chicago (CHICAGO).

BGS: Hojung, first of all could you just tell us how you found out about Barcelona Global Squash and why you decided to visit us?

I found out about Barcelona Global Squash through Vincent, a pro player who I met at a PSA event in Annecy, France. He recommended that I give Victor and his academy a visit during my vacation travels in Spain.

BGS: Tell us a little about your squash background and current participation in college squash.

I picked up squash in high school when I attended Phillips Exeter Academy, then steadily grew more serious about it.

BGS:  Perhaps you could tell us what you found different from the training you did here in BGS and your normal training routine back in Chicago?.

Victor’s hands-on approach to explaining the game is unlike any coaching I’ve ever had. Each minute of each session had a definite purpose that my regular training has lacked. Learning from Victor helped me grow as a player, and will continue to inform my squash as I continue playing.

I have previously studied abroad in India and France, and have travelled around the world for squash. I greatly appreciate that the PSA allows squash players to experience such varied corners of the globe. I am very interested in studying abroad, and have already thought of studying in Barcelona through the University of Chicago. While doing so, I’d love to train at Barcelona Global Squash Academy.

BGS: Finally, you originally come from Korea; can you tell us a little about the health of squash there?

Korea is a sort of a squash puzzle, because within Korea there is some very strong squash. However, very few of those players play internationally through PSA, as it is more beneficial and profitable to play in Korea. I am hopeful that as the health of squash grows internationally and prize money becomes more available, Korea will become a more active participant in global squash. The 2014 Asian Games were held in Incheon, Korea, where Korea took a bronze in the women’s team event.
